Key Terms and Further Descriptions

Vehicle Age:

Our available certifications have age restrictions places on them to allow them to qualify for the certification process. This goes by when the vehicle was built. For Instance, it is currently 2024, so 2018’s are eligible for certifications since they were built in 2017, but 2017 model year vehicles were built in 2016 therefore are no longer eligible even though it seems they fall into that 7 year time frame.

Make:

Toyota Certifications are only eligible for Toyotas. A manufacturer can only certify its own vehicles. However, with the in-house certification we have a little more freedom.

*Our in house certification is for Domestic and Japanese Models it does not include high-line vehicles. One of the few exceptions is Volkswagen from the European market. This covers common brands like Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Toyota, Honda, VW. It does not cover Maserati, Audi, BMW, Jaguar. Please consult a manager before assuming the vehicle can be certified by our in-house program.

Miles:

Miles are based on odometer statement at the time of delivery. This will determine certification eligibility.

Comprehensive Warranty:

TCUV and new vehicles are the only vehicles we sell that come with a comprehensive warranty. This warranty covers all manufacturer-original equipment parts installed by the manufacturer or your selling dealer are covered under this agreement for mechanical failure, unless otherwise excluded. This does not include wearable items like tires, brakes, or oil, unless they otherwise prove to be defective parts. Please consult the TCUV Warranty Supplement for details.

This coverage is secondary to the coverage provided by any remaining Toyota New Vehicle Limited Warranty. That means, if the vehicle has an active warranty from Toyota due to it’s age we would use that warranty first prior to using the one that came with the certified vehicle. This is more important to know for the service department than it is for the salesperson or customer.

A note about comprehensive warranties:

In the past, this has been referred to as a “bumper to bumper” warranty. This is a very dangerous term to use when speaking to a customer because of what the term implies. Please remove this term from your vocabulary.

In addition to using the proper language, most vehicles available for sale are eligible for a comprehensive warranty at additional costs through the finance department. If a customer expresses interest in this, be sure to tell your finance professional and manager during the sales process.

Powertrain Warranty:

This warranty covers any repair or replacement of components which fail under normal use due to a defect in materials or workmanship. Coverage is limited. Examples of things covered can be found at the TCUV Warranty Supplement on Page 12. While our in-house certification is very similar, you should never be telling a customer what is or what is not covered in their warranty. This should be discussed exclusively by the finance professional, management, or the service team and not a sales person. For a TCUV vehicle, the customer can return to any Toyota dealership for coverage, for internal warranties, the customer must return to our dealership.

*7 Years and 100k Total Miles refers to the vehicle to two separate topics. The 7 year coverage starts from the time of purchase, the total mileage refers to the miles on the car. For example, if a TCUV is an ‘18 with 85,000 Miles on it the remainder of the certification at the time of purchase is 7 year/15k Miles on it.

*Unlimited Years 100k Miles from Inception refers to the vehicle at the time of purchase. For example, if a vehicle is an 18 with 85,000 miles on it at the time of purchase, the warranty extends until the vehicle has 185,000 miles on it regardless of its the year 2025 or 2075.

*3 Months / 3k Miles refers to the vehicle age and mileage at the time of purchase. The warranty covers the vehicle until which option comes first.

*1 Months / 1k Miles refers to the vehicle age and mileage at the time of purchase. The warranty covers the vehicle until which option comes first.

Certified Inspection:

Toyota Certified Vehicles have a comprehensive 160-Point Multi-Point Inspection. A certified Toyota Technician must check and sign off on the vehicle that it has been inspected or repaired up to TCUV standards. Click here for a link to view the MPI.

In-House Certified Vehicles have a similar inspection process mimicked after the Toyota MPI Process. We use a different Multi-Point inspection than the TCUV process since that inspection process is designed specifically for Toyotas and our certification can cover other makes. We also use this MPI for all pre-owned vehicle checks should they pass the initial inspection and not be sent to auction. Click here for a link for to vehicle the MPI.

Special APR:

TCUV rates are published quarterly by TFS. These programs are designed to entice customers into looking into a pre-owned vehicle and share the some of the benefits as a new Toyota owner. These rates are available for customers with a Tier 1 credit score and should be disclosed at a manager’s discretion. Rates should not be quoted by a salesperson or used as a tactic to close a customer on a sale or an appointment without a manager’s permission or knowledge. Customers MUST have qualified credit to obtain these rates, which can only be known after a credit application has been submitted to the finance team.

Similar to the Toyota program, our dealership has partnered with local banks to get competitive rates to the TCUV ones. The same qualifications and processes apply to the in-house certification vehicle rates as the TCUV programs.

Roadside Assistance:

TCUV Vehicles come with roadside from date of Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) purchase. Covers most services, including flat tires, lockout service, jump starts, fuel delivery up to 3 gallons, no more than 2 times per month, and towing for mechanical breakdown or collision recovery to the nearest Toyota dealership, except alternative fuel vehicles, including electric and fuel cell vehicles, which may be towed to an authorized charging or fueling station. Services provided exclude any parts required. Program available in continental U.S. and Canada. Restrictions and exclusions may apply. See TCUV Warranty Supplement for details.

Roadside assistance comes with the service contract offered for both TCUV and In-House Certified Vehicles. The service program detailed below, but both use the Toyota Roadside program.

Service:

TCUV Vehicles receive a program comparable to ToyotaCare. They receive a 2 year/25k Mile Service Plan that includes 5 basic services such as oil changes and tire rotations. This is not standard practice for TCUV but something our dealership does as a additional value to a TCUV purchase.

  • This service is includes 5 basic services on the vehicle over the course of 25k miles and two years. This is typically two oil changes depending on the vehicle requirements, but also is a comprehensive multi-point inspection, fluid top-off, and two tire rotations. It also comes with the roadside program through Toyota. This does not cover wear items like brakes or tires or recommended maintenance items such as a fluid exchange.

In-House Certified vehicles receive a 1 year 10k mile service program through TFS regardless of the make of the vehicle certified.

  • This service is includes 2 basic services on the vehicle over the course of 10k miles or 1 year. This could be up to two oil changes depending on the vehicle requirements, but also is a comprehensive multi-point inspection, fluid top-off, and two tire rotations. It also comes with the roadside program through Toyota. This does not cover wear items like brakes or tires or recommended maintenance items such as a transmission flush.

Deductible:

Should a vehicle be eligible for a warranty repair, those repairs would be covered by the company that issued the warranty on the vehicle. The amount the customer pays to have the repair completed depends on any deductible terms included in the original contract.

Toyota Certified Warranty- $0 Deductible or participation from the customer.

In-House Certified Warranty- $200 Deductible or participation from the customer.

Scranton Standard- $100 Deductible or participation from the customer.

For example, a customer brings in the vehicle with a check engine light while covered under warranty. The customer will initially be responsible for the costs to diagnose the vehicle. However, should the issue be covered on the warranty, the warranty company will take responsibility of that cost and associated repairs. The only cost to the customer at that point would be the deductible associated with their warranty as stated above.
